MO‘OLELO: Waikīkī was once a vast marsh land that once encompassed more than 2000 acres. Waikīkī , which means “spouting waters,” was well adapted to the character of the ancient land, where water from the upland valleys would gush from underground. The pattern depicts the mo‘okū‘auhau from the spouting water to the land formation of what we come to know today.
